RECYCLING
Re-make, Re-use, Recycle.

Many clients have asked for recommendations on what to do with their older computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, etc. Myriad options exist to recycle, re-use, or dispose of these items. After exhausting family, friends, schools, and your favorite non-profit organizations for donation possibilities, searching the internet provides a staggerging array of choices and recycling programs.

HOW TO DO IT
Before disposing of any computer, remember to remove all personal information from the computer. It is not safe enough to merely delete the files - a knowledgable computer user can retrieve deleted information. A file shredder program is a great option for electronically "shredding" the information. Hiring a professional (The Computor Tutor - shameless plug) is the most secure method to safely prepare the computer for disposal or donation.

Another option is to physically remove the hard drive (the unit inside the computer that stores all information) and crush it with a hammer or other heavy tool. If the computer is being dontated, the recipient will have to purchase a hard drive to make the computer operational.

In the spirit of Re-make, Re-use, Recycle, the Computor Tutor can "Re-make" some older computers for Re-use. First the Computor Tutor looks at the computer to make sure it is viable for another "home". If the computer can be re-used, the client gives the computer to the Computor Tutor, the Computor Tutor works 5-6 hours (per computer) to remove personal information and get the machine in optimal shape. The re-made computer is donated to someone who can't afford to purchase one. During 2008-2009, the Computor Tutor has re-made for re-use more than ten computers.

The following companies have recycling programs. These are only a FEW of them. Please be aware that these links may be changed at any time by the respective manufacturer. If they do not work, use a search engine on the internet to locate computer recycling programs or computer disposal companies.

Your Town or City
Contact your town or city hall and ask them about their recycling, donation, or disposal programs. If they don't have any, strongly suggest they institute some!
